Kaleidophone in Digital for Algorithmic Composition and Visualization
Kaleidophone in Digital is an algorithmic composition that transforms mathematical decision-making into sound and image. The work is built in Max/MSP around a generative system inspired by a Markov chain, a probabilistic model in which each new state is chosen according to the previous state.
The process of selecting the “next note” is presented as both a musical and cognitive event. The score is shown alongside a visual map of the ““composer’s thinking””, showing how a composer might move between musical ideas through weighted possibilities. As the visual map is scanned over time, it generates pitches and reveals the unfolding logic of the composition.
The result is a digital kaleidoscope of sound. Patterns are constantly formed, transformed, and dissolved. The audience hears not a pre-written melody, but a living chain of decisions, where probability and chance shape the musical surface in real time.
