Shadows’ Resonance is a live audiovisual composition performed using a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller. The work brings timbres derived from the traditional Chinese guqin and xiao into a machine-learning-based interactive system. Through physical gestures, the performer shapes the sound and visual materials in real time. A trained gesture-recognition system maps the performer’s actions to different instrumental timbres and playing techniques, allowing transitions between musical materials to emerge as part of the performance.

The visual component begins with real-time fluid simulations that respond to the movement and flow of the music. As the work develops, both sound and image gradually move toward more abstract shapes and textures. This progression suggests a journey from illusion toward enlightenment. Through the interaction of traditional instrumental references, embodied control, sound, and moving image, Shadows’ Resonance explores perception, reality, and transformation.

About the Artist

Hongshuo Fan is a Chinese interdisciplinary composer, new media artist, and creative programmer. He holds a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition from the University of Manchester and is Assistant Professor of Music Technology at Texas A&M University. His practice combines acoustic instruments, live electronics, generative visuals, light, and embodied interaction across chamber music, interactive performance, installation, and audiovisual work. His current research explores relationships between traditional culture and emerging technologies, with particular attention to machine learning and artificial intelligence in music and multimedia performance.

Fan’s work has been presented at international conferences and festivals including the International Computer Music Conference and the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. His recognitions include the International Computer Music Association Asia-Oceania Regional Award, Second Prize in the International Composition Contest for Acoustic Instrument and Sampo, and the Giga-Hertz Production Award.

Hongshuo Fan is an interdisciplinary composer, new media artist, and creative programmer whose work bridges technology and the arts. His portfolio spans interactive installations, audiovisual performance, and real-time media systems. Hongshuo’s work has been featured in international venues, including the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) and the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) conference. His honors include the Asian-Oceania Regional Award of the International Computer Music Association and the Giga-Hertz Production Award.
