Program Notes

Prismriver demonstrates two compositional capabilities: Music melody generation and accompaniment generation. We algorithmically compose an accompaniment to Necrofantasia, the theme song of Yukari Yakumo, a phantom stage boss from the seventh Touhou game Perfect Cherry Blossom. Prismriver monads are used to handle random generation of motifs that are in harmony with the A Dorian scale.

For music generation, we use formalized algorithms for chord progressions and motif-based music composition, allowing the artist control over the pace of the music when required. We show the capabilities of Prismriver by composing an accompaniment and new music from prescribed motifs. The music is conveniently serialized as MusicXML

About the Artists

Leni Aniva is CS PhD student at Stanford University with interests in machine-assisted theorem proving and cosplay engineering. She is also the violinist of the Stanford Marching Band.

Claire Wang is a CS PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania with interests in programming languages and machine learning, and exploring the relationship between music theory and dependent types. She also organizes Composition (with Isidore Mohr), a free event series on the intersection of arts, math, and code.
